Cornelius, An Example For All

When we think of exemplary Bible characters, we don’t often think of those who are lost. But consider the following words concerning Cornelius: "Immediately therefore I sent to thee; and thou has well done that thou art come. Now therefore are we all here present before God, to hear all things that are commanded thee of God" (Acts 10:33).

First, Cornelius is an example for us because he realized his poverty without God (Matthew 5:3). Cornelius was a responsible man in a position of authority. It is reasonable to assume he owned a significant degree of material goods. Yet he did not let his possessions stand between him and God. No doubt Cornelius was a busy man. But he saw the need to make room for God in his life (Matthew 6:33).

Second, Cornelius is an example for us because he respected the power of the gospel (immediately therefore I sent to thee). Cornelius realized the urgency of the situation and sent for Peter immediately. His attitude stands in stark contrast with that of Felix (Acts 24:25). Cornelius realized God’s will would be revealed to him through man’s preaching (Romans 10:17).

Third, Cornelius is an example for us because he recognized the presence of God (therefore are we all here present before God). Cornelius’ recognition of God’s presence is in opposition to many today who try, just as Jonah, to hide from the presence of God (Jonah 1:3). Many today foolishly think their sins will go unnoticed, but the Lord knows the hearts of all men (Acts 1:24; 15:8).

Fourth, Cornelius is an example for us because he reverenced the prophet of God (to hear all things that are commanded thee of God). Cornelius acknowledged that Peter’s words were from God. Today, we have the commandments of the Lord in written from (1 Corinthians 14:37). Cornelius realized the truth includes commands to obey. Cornelius was not selective in what he heard. He desired to hear all things that Peter had been commanded (Matthew 28:18-20 – "all things").

Fifth, and perhaps most important, Cornelius is an example for us because he responded favorably to the plan of salvation (Acts 10:47-48). We respond to the gospel favorably when we believe the gospel (Mark 16:16), repent of our sins (Acts 17:30), confess our faith (Matthew 10:32-33), and are baptized for forgiveness of sins (Acts 2:38). We must then live a life of faithful service to God (Romans 12:1-2).
