The Punishment of Hell

Although there are people who deny that anyone will experience conscious, eternal punishment in hell, the scriptures clearly teach that very thing! Hell is a place of separation. Jesus spoke of hell as an outer darkness (separated from God, the true light) where there is weeping and gnashing of teeth - Matthew 25:30. John described hell as the second death (separated from the source of life) - Revelation 21:8.

Hell is a place of suffering. Paul’s letter to the church at Rome indicates there will be tribulation and aguish there – Romans 2:8-9. Souls in hell will not be annihilated, but rather exposed to an eternal punishment – Hebrews 10:27-29.

Hell is a place where there will be no relief from suffering. John indicated people in hell will be tormented day and night – Revelation 20:10. The rich man’s unquenchable thirst indicates there will be no relief for those who will spend eternity in hell – Luke 16:24.
