CULLENDALE CHURCH OF CHRIST

The church of Christ was planted in Cullendale August 14, 1955,
by members of the North Madison (now the Maul Road) and Washington
Street churches of Christ in Camden with the full support of both
elderships.
Meeting temporarily in the Kraft Labor Temple, there were 143
present for the first service and a contribution of $243.47 was taken.
Ed Sanders preached at the first service and was secured as the first
regular minister.
Ground was broken for a meeting house on April 7, 1956, and the
first service was conducted in the completed building August 12, 1956,
with 213 present for the morning worship.
November 4, 1956 four elders were appointed to the oversight of
the church. Ernest Crumpler, Carl Haltom, Lonnie Sanders and Louis
Sanders accepted this work on this day.
The organization of the church was completed December 30, 1956,
with the appointment of Bill Bever, Alto Whittington, Chester Phillips,
Earl McMahen, Randolph Reynolds, Lawson Sanders and Bill Sanders
to the work of deacons.
The parsonage was erected directly adjacent to the church build-
ing in 1957-58 with most of the labor being done by the members of the
congregation. In the mid 1990's the church purchased another home for
use as a parsonage, and "The Old House" was converted into a fellowship
hall.
The congregation grew spiritually and numerically and a need for
additional class room space was apparent. A five room annex was erected
in 1963, and again the membership rallied to do the work, thereby
keeping the cost to a minimum.
The Cullendale church of Christ has been mission-minded from the
very beginning assisting in Louisiana, Oregon, Malaysia, Zambia, India,
Caribbean, Russia, South Africa, and having fully supported or partially supported a
number of men as they attended various preacher training schools over
the past forty-five years.
The following men have served this congregation as local ministers:
Ed Sanders, Bill Allen, Walter Buchanan, Melvin Vaughan, John Ballard,
G. L. Peters, Charles Cranford, Richard Allen, Jerry Berley, Carroll Bennett,
C. F. Shirey, Tim Ayers, Garry Stanton, Rod Halliburton, Alvin Swain and Casey Clement.
