OVERCOMING GOLIATH

I Samuel 17:1-58

Thesis: To show that life’s problems/obstacles can be overcome.

INTRODUCTION:

1. Background to David and Goliath.

2. What enabled David to overcome Goliath?

DISCUSSION:

I. Had a proper perception of the giant (verses 17-26).

A. Consider Goliath. Most likely a descendant of a tribe of giants known as the Anakim, or descendants of Anak (Numbers 13:33). These giants probably served in the position of a mercenary. Goliath was about 9 ½ feet tall (I Samuel 17:4). His brass helmet, armor, spear, and huge sword must have made him appear invincible. He was able to intimidate Saul’s army for 40 days.

B. The men of Israel all said, "Have ye seen this man that is come up"? But David replied, "Who is this uncircumcised Philistine, that he should defy the army of the living God"? David realized that, as frightening as the giant may have seemed, he could be overcome.

C. Whatever obstacle comes our way, it can be overcome. Re: Genesis 18:4; Matthew 9:28.

II. Was mindful of past victories (verses 34-37).

A. When David’s ability was questioned, he replied, "Thy servant slew both the lion and the bear: and this uncircumcised Philistine shall be as one of them."

B. David was not boasting, but merely recounting what had already taken place. Notice his words, "The Lord hath delivered me" (verse 37).

C. Yesterday’s victories can provide us with the courage we need to overcome today’s obstacles. Re: Romans 8:35-39; I Corinthians 10:13.

III. Relied on the power of God (verses 43-47).

A. Consider David’s words, "I come to thee in the name of the Lord of hosts, the God of the armies of Israel, whom thou hast defiled."

B. Consider David’s faith. "This day will the Lord deliver thee" (verse 46). "And all the assembly shall know … … for the battle is the Lord’s" (verse 47). David’s victory was possible, not because the Lord was on his side, but because he was one the Lord’s side

C. We can overcome the obstacles in our lives when we avail ourselves of the power of God. Re: Philippians 4:13, Ephesians 6:10.

CONCLUSION:

1. The giant in my life that I need to overcome is ____________________ .

2. I can overcome this giant if:

a) I have a ____________________ .

b) I am mindful of ____________________ .

c) I rely on the ____________________ .
