Behold, Your God

Isaiah 40:9-31

INTRODUCTION:

1. Isaiah 40:9-31 provides us with a picture of the power of God.

DISCUSSION:

I. Behold, God’s Creative Power – 40:12. Psalm 19:1, Romans 1:19-20.

A. Who hath measured the waters in the hollow of his hand.

B. Who hath meted out heaven with a span.

C. Who hath comprehended the dust of the earth in a measure.

D. Who hath weighed the mountains in scales, and the hills in a balance.

II. Behold, God’s Wisdom and Knowledge – 40:13-14.

A. Who hath directed the Spirit of the Lord – v13.

B. Who, being His counselor, has taught God – v13. Consider Romans 11:34.

C. Who taught God knowledge – v14?

D. Who showed God the way of understanding – v14. See Psalm 147:5.

III. Behold, God’s Power Over the Nations – 40:15-17.

A. The nations are as a drop of a bucket – v15.

B. The nations are counted as the small dust of the balance – v15.

C. He taketh up the isles as a very little thing – v15.

D. All nations before him are as nothing – v17. See Psalm 62:9-11.

IV. Behold, God’s Power Over Idols – 40:18-21.

A. What likeness can be compared to God? Can man made image represent God (a Spirit)? – v18. Re: Acts 17:29.

B. A workman’s craft (mere product of human hands) – v19.

C. If a person could not afford a metal god, then a wooden god would do – v20.

D. These gods are powerless whereas Jehovah God has all power.

V. Behold, God’s Power Over Men – 40:22-25.

A. Great men (Nebuchadnezzar, Julius Caesar, etc.), are as grasshoppers in God’s eyes – v22.

B. As we would stand upon a globe, God looks down upon the earth – v22.

C. They are not permanent, but will sink into oblivion – v23-24.

D. No man can be compared to God – v25.

CONCLUSION:

1. Behold, the power of God.
