ANATOMY OF APOSTASY

Jeremiah 8:5-12

INTRODUCTION:

1. Understanding why people in the past have engaged in apostasy will help us understand why people engage in apostasy today (Jeremiah 8:5-12).

DISCUSSION:

FAILURE TO CONSIDER THEIR ACTIONS (8:6)

In secular matters, men consider their path/turn when wrong. In religious matters, men often fail to use the common sense they exercise in other areas of their lives.

Proverbs 6:26-32 – Can a man take fire in his bosom, and his clothes not be burned? Can one go upon hot coals, and his feet not be burned?

Galatians 6:7 – God is not mocked: for whatsoever a man soweth, that shall he also reap.

CARELESSNESS WITH THE SCRIPTURES (8:7-9)

Judah had possession of the law, but their knowledge inadequate. Majority today possess copy of the Bible, but little knowledge as to what it says.

Hosea 4:6 – My people are destroyed for lack of knowledge.

II Timothy 2:15 – Study to shew thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth.

Acts 17:11 – Bereans were more noble in that they received the word with all readiness of mind, and searched the scriptures daily, whether those things were so.

COVETOUSNESS (8:10)

Prophets, priests, everyone was guilty of greed. Many today are hindered from living faithfully because of their greed

Matthew 19:16-28 – Rich young ruler was unwilling to give up his possessions.

I Timothy 6:10 – Love of money is the root of all evil.

I Corinthians 15:9-11 – We are to withdraw from the covetous.

LITTLE OR NO CARE FOR THE TRUTH (8:11)

Jeremiah preached concerning the need for repentance, but false prophets proclaimed "Peace, Peace" when there was no peace. We must adhere to truth.

II John 9-11 – Whosoever transgresseth, and abideth not in the doctrine of Christ, hath not God.

Galatians 4:16 – Am I therefore become your enemy, because I tell you the truth?

John 8:32 – Ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall set you free.

MORAL CALLOUSNESS (8:12)

Judah was no longer ashamed of (to) sin. We should maintain sensitivity to sin and call it what it is – sin.

Isaiah 5:20 – Woe unto them that call evil good, and good evil, that put darkness for light, and light for darkness.

Departure from God is always followed by moral decay. Example: Attitudes/actions of our civil government, society’s tolerance/acceptance of sinful behavior, etc.

CONCLUSION:

1. Result of Judah’s apostasy was destruction, just as is the result of those who fall into apostasy today.

2. Revelation 20:15 – And whosoever was not found written in the book of life was cast into the lake of fire.
