A Pressing Matter

Luke 5:1-11

INTRODUCTION:

1. Luke 5:1-11.

2. Pressed upon him.

a) Those present are an example for us in that they possessed a strong desire – Matthew 5:6, I Peter 2:2.

b) Those present are an example for us in that they possessed a sense of urgency – II Corinthians 6:2.

3. Why should we look upon the reception of the word of God as a pressing matter?

DISCUSSION:

I. Solves man’s greatest questions.

A. Where did I come from - Genesis 1:26-27, Genesis 5:1.

B. Why am I here – I Corinthians 10:31, Ephesians 1:5-6, Ephesians 1:12, Philippians 1:11.

C. Where am I going – Matthew 25:34, Matthew 25:41, Matthew 25:46, II Corinthians 5:10, Ecclesiastes 12:13.

II. Has a powerful influence over our souls.

A. Exceeding powerful – Romans 1:16, I Corinthians 1:18, Hebrews 4:12.

B. Consider the effects of the power of the gospel. The gospel saves – I Corinthians 15:1-2, cleanses – John 15:3, I Peter 1:22, sanctifies – John 17:17, Ephesians 5:26, frees – John 8:32, James 1:25, James 2:12, convicts – Acts 2:37, converts – Psalm 19:7, gives life – I Corinthians 4:15, makes reconciliation possible – II Corinthians 5:19-20, Ephesians 2:16.

III. Serves to guide us in our relationships.

A. As children – Ephesians 6:1-13, Colossians 3:20, I Timothy 5:4.

B. As husbands and wives – Ephesians 5:22-33, Colossians 3:18-19.

C. As parents – Ephesians 6:4, Colossians 3:21.

D. As citizens – Romans 13:1-7, I Peter 2:13.

E. As employers and employees – Colossians 3:22, Colossians 4:1, Ephesians 6:5-9, I Timothy 6:1-2, Titus 2:9-10.

F. In our youth – Ecclesiastes 12:1, I Timothy 4:12, Titus 2:6-8.

G. In our age – Titus 2:1-5.

IV. Sustains us in time of trouble.

A. When sorrowful, gives us comfort – I Thessalonians 4:18.

B. When discouraged, gives us courage – Galatians 6:9.

C. When weak, gives us strength – Ephesians 6:10.

D. When in despair, gives up hope – Hebrews 6:13-20, I Peter 1:3-7.

E. When dying, assures us of life – II Timothy 4:6-8, I Corinthians 15:52-58.

CONCLUSION:

1. Why should we look upon the reception of God’s word as a pressing matter?

a) Solves man’s greatest questions.

b) Has powerful influence over our souls.

c) Serves to guide us in our relationships.

d) Sustains us in time of trouble.

2. We will all one day be judged by God’s word – John 12:48.
