The Great Invitation (3)

Matthew 11:28-30

INTRODUCTION:

1. The great invitation – Matthew 11:28-30.

2. This invitation is great because of what it has to offer – rest (tranquility of soul, relief) to the heavy laden.

3. What type of rest is offered by Christ’s invitation? Consider Romans 6:1-23.

DISCUSSION:

1. Rest from the practice of sin – Romans 6:1-2.

a) Death always involves a separation – James 2:26.

b) When we are dead to sin, we separate ourselves from sin.

2. Rest from the pollution of sin – Romans 6:3.

a) Cleansed of our sin - II Corinthians 7:1, James 1:21.

b) One purpose of baptism is to wash away our sins – Acts 22:16, I Peter 1:22.

3. Rest from the prison of sin – Romans 6:6-7.

a) Whoever persists in their sin is the servant of sin – Romans 6:16.

b) God’s word is able to free us from our sin - John 8:34, Galatians 5:1.

c) We have been bought (redeemed) by Christ’s blood – Acts 20:28, I Timothy 2:6, I Peter 1:18-19.

4. Rest from the power of sin – Romans 6:12, 14.

a) We are not to let sin reign in our mortal body – Romans 6:12

b) Sin shall not have dominion over us – Romans 6:14.

5. Rest from the penalty of sin – Romans 6:23.

a) Wages of sin is death – Romans 6:23.

b) Free gift of God is eternal life – Romans 6:23.

CONCLUSION:

1. An eternal rest will be granted to the faithful on the day of judgment – II Thessalonians 1:6-9.

2. The great invitation – Matthew 11:28-30.
