PARABLE OF THE SOWER

Matthew 13:3-9, 18-23, Mark 4:3-9, 13-20, Luke 8:4-8. 11-15

INTRODUCTION:

1. Matthew 13:3-9, 18-23.

DISCUSSION:

I. The sower. Sower represents Christ (Matthew 13:37). Can be applied to us as Christians.

A. Sower went forth. We must go forth. Consider some of the reasons why we often fail to go forth. Consider the "key person." Re: Acts 8:4, II Timothy 2:2.

B. Seed was sown among all types of soils. Word is to be sown among all types of hearts. Re: Acts 10:34-35.

C. Seed was sown with expectations that it would produce. Word is to be sown with expectations that it will produce. Re: Isaiah 55:11, I Timothy 4:16.

D. This year’s crop is not dependent upon what farmer sowed last year. The responsibility to sow this year is not negated by what we may have done last year.

II. The seed. Seed represents the word of God (Luke 8:11).

A. Seed has the power to produce. God’s word has power to sanctify (John 17:17), to convict (Acts 2:37), to save (Romans 1:16, I Corinthians 15:1-2), to purify/give life (I Peter 1:22-33).

B. Not possible for productive plant to exist until the seed is sown. Not possible for fruitful Christian to exist until the seed is sown. Re: Romans 10:17.

C. Seed produces after its own kind. God’s word produces after its own kind (Christians only and the only Christians).

D. Seed must be kept free of impurities. God’s word must be kept free from impurities. We are to desire the sincere (pure) milk of the word. Re: I Peter 2:1-2.

III. The soil. Different types of soils in the parable represent the different hearts of men.

A. Wayside soil represents persons who fail to become Christians by allowing Satan to take word away from them. Ex: applying word to someone else, hearing with closed mind, etc.

B. Stony soil represents persons who hear and obey but later fall away because of their failure to become rooted and grounded. Re: Colossians 2:7, Hebrews 3:12.

C. Thorny soil represents those persons who hear and obey but fall away because they are distracted by the cares and pleasures of this world. Re: Matthew 6:25-31, II Timothy 3:4.

D. Good soil represents those persons who hear, obey, and bear fruit. Re: winning souls (Romans 1:13), fruit of the Spirit (Galatians 5:22-23), good works (Colossians 1:10), Hebrews 13:15.

CONCLUSION:

1. What type of soil are you?
