I. God
remembered his promise to Abraham - Matthew 1:1.
A. Through
the seed of Abraham, all nations of the earth were to be blessed - Genesis
12:1-3, Galatians 3:15-19. Christ was not only a descendant of Abraham, but
of Isaac - Genesis 21:12, Jacob - Genesis 28:13-14, Judah - Genesis 49:10,
Jesse - Isaiah 11:10, and David - II Samuel 7:12-16.
B. God
still remembers his promises. He is faithful to keep his promises - Hebrews
10:23, 11:11, II Peter 3:9. Today, Christians are heirs of the Abrahamic
promise - Galatians 3:6-7, 4:28. God has given us exceeding great and
precious promises - II Peter 1:4. One of those promises is eternal life to
the faithful - I John 2:25.
II. Christ
rules from the throne of David - Matthew 1:1, 6.
A. The
angel told Mary that God would give her son (Jesus) the throne of David -
Luke 1:32, Acts 2:30.
B. Today,
we are to place ourselves under the power (ASV - authority) of Christ -
Matthew 28:18. Many people depict Jesus in the manger at Christmas or on the
cross at Easter but never acknowledge his authority as king (ex: in matters
of worship, importance of the church, etc.).
III. Christ’s
reign is not (and will never be) on this earth - Matthew 1:11.
A. God
promised that none of Jeconiah’s (Coniah’s) descendants would rule in
Judah - Jeremiah 22:30. Christ’s throne is in heaven - Hebrews 1:8, 8:1.
B.
Christians are citizens of Christ’s heavenly kingdom – Philippians 3:20.
Colossians 1:13, I Corinthians 15:24.
IV. God is no
respector of persons – Matthew 1:5.
A. Rahab
had been a harlot in Jericho – Joshua 2:1. Ruth was a Gentile from the
land of Moab – Ruth 1:4. Yet both became ancestors of David and Jesus.
B. In
matters of salvation, God is no respector of persons today – Acts
10:34-35, Romans 2:11.
1. Because
God kept his promise to Abraham and Christ is exalted as king, salvation is
available to all who obey.
2. Obedience
consists of hearing the gospel – Romans 10:17, believing the gospel – Mark
16:16, repenting of sins – Acts 17:30. confessing your faith in Jesus –
Acts 8:37, and being baptized for the forgiveness of sins – Acts 2:38.
