Ye Are The Light Of The World

Matthew 5:14-16
"Ye are the light of the world. A city that is set on an hill cannot be hid. Neither do men light a candle and put it under a bushel, but on a candlestick; and it giveth light unto all that are in the house. Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father which is in heaven."

INTRODUCTION:

1. Matthew 5:14-16.

2. Consider three elements of our text:

a) Illumination (light).

b) Influence.

c) Intention.

DISCUSSION:

I. Illumination – "Ye are the light of the world."

A. Light eliminates darkness – II Corinthians 6:14. Just as light drives away the darkness, a Christian’s presence ought to have an effect on others.

B. Light serves to guide and warn of danger. Consider Philippians 2:15-16.

II. Influence – "Let your light so shine before men."

A. We are not to let our lights be hidden under a bushel. But often people allow their lights to be hidden under the bushel of business, ease, ignorance, or apathy.

B. Notice it is the works that are to be seen, not the worker. The best lights are those that project more light and less shadow. Likewise, as Christians we ought to project more of Christ and less of ourselves.

III. Intention – "and glorify your Father which is in heaven."

A. We are not lights in and of ourselves but rather we are light in the Lord – Ephesians 5:8.

B. Christ is the true, or original, light – John 8:12. As Christians, we are to reflect Christ’s light – II Corinthians 4:6.

CONCLUSION:

1. Consider three elements of our text:

a) Illumination.

b) Influence.

c) Intention.
