Blessed Are They That Mourn

Matthew 5:4

Blessed are they that mourn: for they shall be comforted.

INTRODUCTION:

1. Matthew 5:4.

2. Mourn – much more than merely a feeling of sadness. Conveys the idea of to mourn, weep, or lament.

3. Admittedly, there is a mourning that is unprofitable (ex: mourning over loss of material goods or mourning when selfish desires, ambitions are unmet).

4. What type of mourning causes a person to be blessed?

DISCUSSION:

I. Blessed are they that mourn. Looking at Jesus’ statement in its spiritual context we could say, "Blessed are they that mourn over their sin."

A. Reasons many fail to mourn over their sin.

1. They do not recognize it as sin. Many people (unfortunately both in and out of the church) often celebrate the very things that ought to cause them to be shamed.

a. Consider Jeremiah 6:15 – "Were they ashamed when they committed abomination? nay, they were not at all ashamed, neither could they blush:".

b. Also I Corinthians 5:1-2 – "And ye are puffed up, and have not rather mourned."

2. They recognize it as sin but consider it a trivial matter.

a. Romans 6:1-2 – "Shall we continue in sin that grace may abound?"

b. Romans 6:23 – "The wages of sin is death."

B. Benefits of mourning.

1. Necessary in order for repentance to take place. Joel 2:12-13 – "weeping and mourning, rend your heart, and turn unto the Lord." Consider II Corinthians 7:10.

2. Motivates us to overcome our failures. Matthew 26:69-75 – Peter went out and wept bitterly.

II. For they shall be comforted.

A. In this life.

1. Comfort is made possible when God removes the cause of our mourning. Hebrews 10:17 – "And their sins and iniquities will I remember no more."

2. We receive comfort from other Christians. II Corinthians 1:3-5 – "Who comforteth us in all our tribulation, that we may be able to comfort them which are in any trouble."

B. Throughout eternity.

1. Mourning experienced in this life is temporary. Psalm 30:5 – "weeping may endure for a night, but joy cometh in the morning."

2. In heaven there will be neither sorrow nor crying. Revelation 21:4 – "And God shall wipe away all tears from their eyes; and there shall be no more death, neither sorrow, nor crying."

CONCLUSION:

1. Blessed are they that mourn, for they shall be comforted.
