THE GOSPEL
Philippians 1:27
"Only let
your conversation be as it becometh the gospel of Christ: that whether I come
and see you, or else be absent, I may hear of your affairs, that ye stand fast
in one spirit, with one mind striving together for the faith of the
gospel;"
INTRODUCTION:
1. Philippians
1:27.
2. Let
your conversation be as it becometh the gospel of Christ.
a) Conversation.
Let your manner of life – ASV. Let your whole behavior be worthy of those who
are pledged to Christ.
b) Becometh.
Suitable, worthy of. The word comes from a word meaning "having the same
weight" or "weighing as much as." Kenneth Wuest has said,
"The saints are to see to it that their manner of life weighs as much as
the gospel they profess to believe, or their words will not have weight."
3. What
does a life becoming of the gospel entail?
DISCUSSION:
I. Conviction
– stand fast in one spirit. Also consider I Corinthians 16:13.
A. About
the singularity of the church. Re: Colossians 1:13-14, I Peter 2:9.
B. About
the sinfulness of denominationalism. Re: I Corinthians 1:10-11.
C. About
the sanctity of the home. Re: Psalm 127:1.
D. About
the salvation of the world. Re: Matthew 16:26, John 4:35.
II. Cooperation
– striving together for the faith of the gospel.
A. Unity
within the church is a worthy goal. Re: Psalm 133:1.
B. We
are labourers together with God. Re: I Corinthians 3:9.
C. A
divisive spirit is contrary to God’s will. Re: I Corinthians 1:10.
D. A
divided brotherhood is the working of Satan.
III. Courage
– "In nothing terrified by your adversaries" (Philippians 1:28).
A. We
need courage to face the Goliaths in our lives. Re: I Samuel 17:45-47.
B. We
need the courage of Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego. Re: Daniel 3:18.
C. Persecution
in the early church opened doors of opportunity. Re: Acts 8:1-4.
D. A
soldier without courage is not fit for the Lord’s army. Re: II Timothy 2:2.
CONCLUSION:
1. The
Christian life, as challenging as it may be, is still the best life one can
live.
2. A
life becoming of the gospel should convict our souls, challenge our hearts,
and change our thinking.
