A PSALM OF SEVEN THUNDERS

Psalm 29

INTRODUCTION:

1. Observations concerning a thunderstorm.

2. God is at the heart of Psalm twenty-nine. This short psalm, consisting of only eleven verses, includes no less than twenty-five references to God.

DISCUSSION:

I. Praise of God (1-2).

A. O ye mighty. Mighty men of the earth? Angels? Re: Psalm 148:2.

B. The glory that is due his name. Re: Psalm 29:2, 96:8.

C. Beauty of holiness.

1. Priestly garments? Re: II Chronicles 20:21.

2. Holy life? Re: I Peter 1:16.

II. Power of God (3-4).

A. God’s power over nature (Jeremiah 10:12, Psalm 102:25).

B. God’s power cannot be ignored.

C. In contrast to any power man may have, God’s power is retained forever (Isaiah 26:4).

III. Presence of God (5-10).

A. Even the wilderness recognizes the presence of God.

B. "Flames of fire" is most likely a reference to the lightning.

C. God is omnipresent (Psalm 139:7-12).

IV. Protection of God (11).

A. Provides peace amidst the storms.

B. Our strength enables us to endure the storms of life (Psalm 28:8).

CONCLUSION:

1. Psalm twenty-nine serves as a reminder of:

a) Praise of God.

b) Power of God.

c) Presence of God.

d) Peace of God.
